Manuela Fun
I am Manuela Fun (1974), born and raised in the Netherlands, with Surinamese-Creole, Surinamese-Hindustani, Chinese and Portuguese roots. Those roots have shaped the way I see. I am curious about what lives beneath the surface, and about what becomes visible when we look beyond our familiar view of the world.
Other cultures have always drawn me, as has the wisdom of Indigenous and tribal peoples. At the heart of many traditions I recognise a strength and wisdom that reaches further than the rules and forms people have built around them.
For me, writing is creating from the undercurrents within myself. Everything I have lived through, consciously and unconsciously, what I pick up from the world and from conversations with others, emotions, the wisdom of my ancestors: it all comes together in the words that land on the page.
As we wrote, high tech and the Hopi prophecy came to the fore, and my fascination with technology and my interest in Indigenous wisdom slowly merged. We each created from our own perspective and our own strength. Only later did I realise that the story touches on the challenge of our time:
How do we make sure our wisdom and our sense of responsibility grow along with our technological possibilities? And what does that ask of how we treat the earth, each other and ourselves?
